Porto – Best European destination 2014

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The backdrop and context of Porto for the Summer School Editorial course was reinformced yesterday when the city of Porto was elected for the second time “Best European Destination” (video) of the year, by the European Consumers Choice. Porto was first awarded the honor in 2012. Last year the title was won by Istanbul.

The city won with 14.8% of the votes, followed by Zagreb, Vienna, Nicosia, Budapest, the island of Madeira, Milan, Madrid, Berlin and Rome the other destinations in the top ten.

According to the European Consumers Choice, “The fact that Porto has once more been selected reflects well its fame, attractiveness and excellence as a tourist destination, as well as the dynamism of this sector with the greatest growth potential and which contributes most to national GDP.”

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2014 EDITORIAL COURSE

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We officially welcome applications for the 2014 edition of the Editorial course taking place this coming July.

Principle tutors will once again be Hamish Muir, Jessica Helfand and Andrew Howard. Jonathan Barnbrook is unable to join us this year but we hope to have him back in future editions.

The full course fee, which includes accommodation, has risen slightly from 1850 to 1890 euros because of increased hotel costs. The alternate course fee (without arranged accommodation) remains the same at 1200 euros. Last year's participants included both design students and professionals from the United States, Mexico, Portugal, Turkey, India and Thailand. We look forward to welcoming another group of enthusiastic and talented participants to join in Porto in July.

Sunday 21st July
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The editorial design course came to end on Saturday evening with a final dinner and celebration. We're thrilled with the whole two weeks – it was dynamic, intense and hugely enjoyable for all of us. Participants responded extremely well to the demands of the second week in which they were asked to devise and produce their individual editorial projects (two complete copies). The results were diverse, with some unusual outcomes as many bravely moved out of their comfort zone in order to test themselves and their ambitions. The final group crit took place on Saturday morning which was followed by the giving out of specially designed course certificates. We're now in the process of gathering all the documentation collected along the two weeks to serve as material for a short film about the course which will also show examples of the work produced. More news of this later. We'd like to thank everyone involved for making the course a truly enjoyable and memorable experince. For sure there will be more next year.

Friday 12th July
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The beginning of the summer school course was marked by unusually hot weather but that didin't stop everyone from taking part in the various planned guided walks. A tour on Monday, led by Andrew Howard and Ana Raposo, to familiarise participants with some of Porto's vernacular street lettering, was followed on Tuesday by lectures and walks on Porto's History (led by Manuel Loff) and architecture (led by Nuno Grande). Individual lectures by Andrew Howard and Jessica Helfand on Wednesday were followed by Hamish Muir's and Jonathan Barnbrook's lectures on Thursday. Almost a week into the summer school course and individual projects are beginning to be developed.
